      Great Company but Salaries Need to be Adjusted

      Pros

      Great benefits; time-off, etc. Working at home is never a problem when necessary. Great management. I feel empowered to get my work done without having my manager looking over my shoulder. You really could not find a better company in my opinion for work/life balance. I really respect the CEO and Executive Management team to steer this big ship into the right direction. I feel I have all of the tools I need to get my job done effectively and efficiently.

      Cons

      Cengage needs to invest in its most important asset: its people. I feel I am underpaid for my position in comparison to what I see others doing at competing companies in the same or similar industries. I love it here, but frankly if I had to pick one reason why I would even consider leaving at this time it would only be to increase my salary. The last two years adjustment didn't even cover the hike in the health insurance contribution my family must pay in, so year-over-year I'm losing. It would be nice to be paid industry competing wages.

      Good people, too much work

      Pros

      Generally a lovely team of people who work hard and treat each other with kindness and respect. The various teams and departments make sure morale is kept up with various clubs like bake-clubs and Eurovision pod decorating competitions.

      Cons

      It can be a bit demoralising when you feel that the pressure is always on. There is a lack of planning at the higher levels and it trickles down to lower levels. Decisions often seem like they are made in the moment without a lot of thought and then creates more work down the track.

      Thanks for your post. The pressure is indeed on. I feel it too. Transforming our company so we can transform education is a big goal. I rely on my yoga practice to help me feel balanced under that kind of pressure. Inside Cengage, I can assure you there is a lot of planning, but we need to do a better job of making it accessible earlier to those who will implement it. With regard to the last part of your note, on career pathing, I hope you will speak with your manager and/or HR Partner about your interests. Sometimes a new opportunity may be outside your immediate team or region, and it could be dependent on your flexibility in terms of moving, or considering a lateral move to pick up a new skill set. I’m thinking particularly of one our our SVPs who has been with Cengage more than 20 years and has held roles in sales, marketing, product, and probably other areas – she’s been here longer than I have!       Dedicated employees in a company unprepared for the future.

      Pros

      Family friendly for my spouse and children. Accommodating to recent death in my family. Decent benefits and 401K. Friendly atmosphere at least in my location. Fairly flexible with work/life balance. Accepting and tolerant of a diverse workforce.

      Cons

      Professional salaries are not competitive; open poaching from Pearson, McGraw, and vendors/contractors. Mid and upper-mid management are often clueless about roles, responsibilities, and workflows. Talent is underutilized. Takes an act of Congress to get simple things done. Not a place where new ideas can take root and grow which will be its undoing. Understaffed for the expectations that are enforced.
