Be Wary of Cengage at the Moment

Pros

At this point, there are none, unless you are an executive. At one time, however, I loved this company and its culture of comradery and a true concern for learners and educators.

Cons

Worker morale is at an all-time low, pay is low for EdTech industry jobs, and layoffs are always hanging over teams in all departments. Carrer growth is based on favoritism, and if you have been pigeonholed into a role, good luck with advancement. Teams have no idea how to implement the new systems that have been thrown together, with fingers crossed that things work. Customer service is embarrassing, in regard to wait times and professionalism once customers reach someone (blame low pay and cuts for this). Bonus structure is not transparent, and I question the integrity of the finance team who seem to try to make sales prove they earned the bonus. They will try their hardest not to pay a deserving rep. Management becomes sales' enemy when it comes to payout time. Company seems to not care about quality sales hires, but rather on Ken and Barbie looks at super-low pay for green sales reps. Sales VP is old school field rep who has something to prove and will make a lot of changes in the near future.

So glad and grateful to be out of there

Pros

I 'grew up' at Cengage. I had the best manager a person could have and I thrived. Was my first corporate job and liked the perks! Car, bonuses, pay, etc. Benefits are good. Tuition reimbursement and just overall solid benefits. I am grateful for my time there and there's a lot of solid people. And the severance when the layoff happened was great, plus they set you up with a company to help you find another job.

Cons

The last two years were brutal. I had survived multiple re-orgs and layoffs, and I'm glad I was let go when I was. Disorganized, so much gossip, toxic complaining, And the products are good but not great and constant tech issues (which I know will exist anywhere) The industry is not great and hasn't been for awhile. It's hard to be a part of that when you're working for a company that needs to survive. And all the stuff with Cengage being bought by some other company to make us profitable? I get it, it's a company and needs to make money. My time was done at Cengage. Lots of unhappy people and that's what people are bonded on (trauma bonding?!) They are trying but I'm just glad to not have to fake a smile anymore.

Pros

You will learn to work under stress all the time.

Cons

- Management is busy with propaganda to attract new investors or go public. No one cares about the business or the customers. - Don't get sucked in when the CEO says "we are transparent and we will listen to concerns". It's a bait. As soon as you raise issues, you will be fired. It's jsut a sham. - HR will tell you that weekly work hours are 37.5 and you will be required to fill in timesheet for 37.5 hours. In reality, you will work over 50 hours/week - Directors and VPs are highly incompetent. Most pretend they have a lot of work to do but don't do squat. - Lower pay compared to other companies - Managers get hefty bonuses while employees get nothing. - No stock and the stock is not publicly traded even if you get it In my 15 years, this is the worst company I have worked for. The marketing and communications team is trying to change the image of the company but inside it's still the same trash.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. While some of our work is seasonal and activity increases during back-to-school, work-life balance is a priority and we respect employee’s personal lives. We work hard to create a culture where employees feel valued, can bring their authentic selves to work, and feel comfortable being candid with their managers. I am truly saddened to hear that this hasn’t been your experience and am concerned that you are being asked to falsify your timesheet. We take these claims very seriously and I encourage you to reach out to me directly so that I can address this issue. Regarding compensation, our HR department closely analyzes the market to provide fair compensation and we strive to offer competitive, equitable programs that recognize and reward strong performance. Employee growth and development is a priority – we’ve expanded our programs over the past year and continue to invest in this area. We realize we aren’t perfect, and recognize that Cengage Group may not be the right fit for everyone, but authenticity is important to us; all stories and sentiments shared by employees and customers in our marketing materials come from them directly.
