Stratified dinosaur of a company

Recommend
Business Outlook

Pros

Good work/life balance and telecommuting policies

Cons

Corporate structure is broken up into powerful silos of publishing groups who won't change and a new technology area who don't know how to get them to change, so they just build products the company doesn't need. Very poor advancement prospects The same incompetents get all the projects, despite history of failure and incomplete launches Poor recognition Lower end salaries (publishing industry is low across the board) Lip service payed to opportunities and change, but no actual corporate priority given.

Great working environment, organizational confusion

Pros

As a company, Cengage provides employees with a lot of flexibility (work/life balance). They encourage charitable work. The people there are great to work with and incredibly dedicated.

Cons

The company is having a slow go of moving from being a traditional publishing company to a digital-first company. This has caused a lot of organizational growing pains that have gone on for some time.

Pros

Very respected in the library and school communities. Products are excellent. A good place to start in this industry, but don;t expect to stay.

Cons

If you are female or a minority, do not expect to move up in the company. This is a failing they have always had, probably due to the "good ole boys" mentality that sales management has had for years. Pay is crap, and longevity means nothing, as they would rather "lay-off" seasoned sales people and hire newbies and pay them less. Operates in crises mode, and changing everything around every year does not make customers or employees feel good about things.
