Avoid if you're a marketer

Pros

There is an inclusive, progressive employee benefits scheme that involves all employees. The company on the whole produces good quality products and services (typically as a result of acquiring companies with good quality products and services). There are many extremely talented, high-calibre employees at lower tiers of the organisation.

Cons

Career progression does not appear to be based on merit. There are a lot of incapable and/or ineffective mid- and high-level managers throughout the business, and this negatively affects morale, career progression and job satisfaction. I was going to write that it is difficult to see how some of them got and continue to keep their jobs, but then I realised that they get and continue to keep their jobs by being good at taking undue credit for work that, in reality, is being initiated, planned, managed and carried out by others (on more than one occasion I saw documents that I had written circulate back to me, having been sent out by one of my senior colleagues and presented as their own work). The entire company has a very short-term mindset, which is a result of it being aggressively sales-focused. This is often to the detriment of other departments, and often creates perverse incentives. There is chronic misalignment of teams, departments, functions and objectives, so that parts of the business operated in isolation or even, at times, in opposition. There is almost endemic neglect of marketing as a skill and a function. I have never worked at a company where marketing is so misunderstood, disrespected or undervalued: I had six managers in five years - and I had marketing colleagues who had even more than that - which is a great indication that the senior management don't have a strategy for you. I have never worked at a company where morale in the marketing team was so low. If a marketer asked me whether they should go for a job at IHS I would beg them not to apply.

Pros

Good opportunities to get marketable experience earlier in your career vs elsewhere on Wall Street.

Cons

The management has always been cost focused but they managed to balance this with growth. This has increasingly given way to a management philosophy of growth by cutting. Recent M&As seem random and a poor decision except as cost reduction thru scale. Management seems rattled by poor execution of new initiatives and can't see past its nose. Deep cuts to headcount have reinforced silos by encouraging defensiveness and anyone that tries to work across them ultimately penalized. Company has vision to sell to investors but on the inside there is little of that binding the myriad P&Ls except overburdened central functions and brainddead, self congratulating management. Recent pay cuts hit top performers and headcount cuts hit deep while no such drastic measures made by competitors. As a consequence top talent not positioned to benefit from an inevitable acquisition looking for the exits.

Pros

- Smart colleagues - Generally well-respected in the industry - Offices around the world - CEO and leadership team

Cons

- Mafia-like mentality within the individual companies. No one likes to work together, too much gossip (especially by management) - Middle management is absolutely awful. No accountability. No training. No one cares how they treat employees. - Does not care about the advancement of younger employees. I am not sure why, because there are many smart younger people working here. - No communication between groups. - Sends employees to other countries to live and work and then does not renew their certificate to have said employee work there. This makes it so the employee is there illegally. Then, they fire the employee without cause; the same one they sent to live in another country, due to a company error. - Worst HR team you could imagine. Almost comical. I do not see IHSM lasting more than 7 years with the type of management they have here. It simply is not possible.
