Pros

Good mission, good engineer talent, good perks, data-oriented company

Cons

Complete lack of trust and authenticity which creates insecurity (attrition has been high for the last two years), weak management (no real strategy), negative behavior goes unnoticed and sometimes rewarded...

Run as fast as you can

Pros

Fully paid health insurance, and some very nice people.

Cons

- The company has no real strategy. Ev changes his mind constantly, and you'll feel the effects because the micromanagement at this company is next level. His whims dictate your team's plans, so your work will be scrapped every two months to start over on his latest idea. - Medium's gone full fascist. They used to "manage out" people who spoke up, and now they just deactivate them because everything's remote and they can disappear people with the click of a button. - Imagine working for a toddler billionaire who's surrounded himself with yes-men. Who do you lose more respect for: the toddler, or the craven adults who enable him? - Hands down, this is the most toxic and evil place I've ever worked. It's surprising because the majority of your co-workers are perfectly nice people. Some of them drink the Kool-Aid, and others are just trying to survive long enough to gtfo.

Pros

- Used to have a positive culture - Used to have a lot of technically strong people. A lot of them have left or are on their way out though. - Modern tech stack with microservices and CI/ CD

Cons

Company is changing from "people first" to "let's just build things, stop complaining". I almost wish CEO would just do a Basecamp/ Coinbase memo to make this shift really clear so people know what they're getting themselves into, and we can drop the facade of being a friendly and welcoming place. Please don't trust the recent alarmingly positive reviews and think for yourself. I have a feeling they're posted by HR or recruiting. Ask yourself, and ask the people you interview with - when was Medium's last fundraising? What's Medium's runway? How is Medium funded since its last fundraising forever ago? How does Medium plan to become profitable? What kind of leadership does Medium have to take it to the next level besides the CEO? How does Medium decide on what to bet on, and how does Medium set goals? What's the average tenure for product and design people? If after hearing the answers you still think this is a good place for you, then go for it! I just want people to have the right expectations going in. I've come to believe that a financially unhealthy company cannot have a healthy culture, since at the end of the day we're trying to run a business. Also, if you're a designer or PM, please just save yourself some time and go to some other company. Ask your interviewer: what's the average tenure of a designer or PM? How many designers/ PMs have left the company this past year? Medium churns through them and don't give them any autonomy.
