No upward mobility at Corporate HQ

Pros

Many great employees and sound management. Remodeled offices, average pay, benefits, stable employment.

Cons

Serious lack of corporate training and onboarding of employees, no career management, poor succession planning, inconsistent and inadequate talent management, lackluster benefits, flagrant violation of FLSA overtime pay for employees earning incentives, and not a healthy environment for employees seeking better pay and upward mobility. High turnover rate among mid level management.

Assistant Manager, Live On Site

Pros

I was lucky to live and work on a beautifully maintained property for most of my time with ESS. The job is nice for people who like to step away from the desk and want a little physical activity during the workday. My apartment was large, in a great location, and nicely kept by the previous occupant who had lived in the place for around 10 years. This location and the nice apartment were really the selling points for the job. The customers at this location were really great and fun to assist. The ESS training program is a really integrative and very well organized.

Cons

The job is really little more than a glorified janitor and/or maintenance position, even though they slyly call it a "Management" position. Yes, you do have opportunities to practice sales skills with the customers, but this is a very small portion of your overall workload. Even at a well-maintained property like where I typically worked, the janitorial duties are at least 75% of your daily tasks. Forget about it, if you get a property that is not well-maintained. The company does not always promote from within, as they would have you believe at hire. The tipping point for me came with the opening of 2 new properties in my area. I saw veteran employees in our district get passed over for promotions by new hires who had zero experience in this field. It seems the District Training Leader's relationship with the District Manager can have a great impact on employees' ability to gain promotion. If a DM doesn't like the DTL who trained you, then there's little hope for upward mobility. If you want a low-stress manual labor job, and you have low expectations for "moving up" in the company, this is good place to stay. For me, this was just a place to work with a decent apartment until I moved onto a better job.

Pros

The pros at Extra Space are plenty. Decent benefits, Excellent training, Decent work/life balance, and decent vacation time. You'll be trained in a vast range of areas with skills that you can definitely take elsewhere such as sales, property management, or any retail management job. The training I received at ESMI was very thorough and when you were done with 'on paper' training you got to shadow a store for a couple weeks to put it all in to practice. Ideally you should be able to run a store with little supervision. Autonomy is good as well. If you do well and you have a decent district manager there should be no micro-management. Suggestions are taken seriously and even if it may take years to implement it rarely falls on deaf ears.

Cons

This is a personal con, and it may not translate over to everyone though the company, but middle management does have to step it up. District managers (in my experience) will often pick favorites and no matter how hard you work or how good your numbers are if you are not friends with your DM you're going to have a hard time. After working at ESMI for several years and being one of the top performers in my district I was looked over for promotion time and time again. Another thing that is universal company wide is the fact that you should plan on getting dirty. Often. Maintenance personnel are hard to come by so chances are you are going to have to do a LOT of cleaning, painting, and fixing yourself. For some that is not a bad thing, and at times it wasn't to me but it can get a little old. By the time I left I felt that Extra Space had gone from a small storage company to a huge corporation, making me feel like they had lost touch with what had made them great to begin with. The difficulty of the work is not that hard overall, however there is a lot that needs to be done and the pay certainly does not reflect that. Extra Space has some of the highest paid people in the storage industry but when compared to leasing agents at apartment complexes they make very little.
