Poorly managed, Poor HR support, and Low Staff Morale

Pros

Good benefits, most low-level employees are good people.

Cons

Director who did not care if staff are not busy/idle. Many staff have low morale due lack of work and lack of engagement. A number of people in my department are looking for work elsewhere. Spent most of my time fighting fires, and doing managers job so they look good for their superiors. Spent the past year mostly working solo with no support. Complained about inappropriate management behavior (race, sexual orientation discrimination) but ultimately HR believed the manager over the employee. Disappointed that HR isn't there for regular staff and would rather just sweep things under the rug.

In addition to HR support, we invest in tools like third party-administered whistler-blower reporting and anonymous employee engagement surveys. We value all feedback; it helps us become a better, stronger company. We continue to work to build a culture that promotes a respectful and rewarding experience for all our employees.

Commercial Underwriter

Business Outlook

Pros

The company has undergone some major changes over the last 2 years and there are more changes on the horizon. It's not typical for insurance companies to be open to change. You'll have some fantastic coworkers to work with!

Cons

The work life balance is just not there, due to poor staffing and a lack of understanding of what the job entails on a regional management level. Although corporate has a strong wellness focus, it's all for show. Reality is that Underwriters work late/come in on weekends to keep heads above water. This results in some very burnt out staff that are afraid of admitting they are burnt out for fear of being labeled "weak" or "lazy". The company had aggressive growth targets, so the pressure is on.
