Uses a lot of Contractors

Pros

Consistent, reliable place to work. Very good benefits. Average pay.

Cons

They like to use a lot of contract people, like Deloitte instead of using their own to do big projects. This leaves employee worried and not having a lot to keep busy. They are also secretive and don't communicate well with employees on.

Thank you for providing your feedback and concerns. Our transformational projects are exciting and we do our best to give opportunities to employees, while also recognizing when we need the help of specific experts from the industry. By using consulting services, we avoid having to resize our workforce before and after project delivery. We believe this is less disruptive to the day-to-day work of our teams, given the number of shorter term initiatives underway. We do appreciate your observations and can use your feedback to make sure we continue to identify interesting opportunities for employees where possible.

Pros

My boss was great. But management has no idea how to manage a company. Great benifits, lots of company incentives.

Cons

Layoffs no job security. Nobody is safe. Pay not competitive in the industry. New computer system lacking up to date technology. Can't access help from HR, was repremanded when I tried to contact them regarding benefits questions.

Pros

Great team environment, focus on customers and keeping staff engaged and motivated, lots of big changes made recently that is grandly improving the culture and engagement levels. Management is encouraging and supportive. I always feel encouraged to do my very best and am recognized and rewarded for same. Competitive pay, great benefits, alternative work arrangements give you extra 1-2 days off per month, excellent work-life balance focus. Continued learning is highly encouraged.

Cons

This is not a place for people who want to just coast by doing the absolute bare minimum and crying when they are asked to go above and beyond. Our culture is focused on people bringing their best every day - those who are not interested in meeting the company's high standards should go work elsewhere. The people who will succeed here are highly motivated, team-oriented, hard-working and adapt well to change. Technology does need to be updated but management has always acknowledged this and are in the process of making major changes to improve that.

Pros

Benefits are very good. Pay is decent. Personal spending account offered each year. Bonuses possible, based on Company results. Insurance courses paid if successful. Great place to work if you are an actuary or a VP.

Cons

Company "transformation" in progress to de-mutualize. Job insecurity felt by many employees. Confusion is apparent. Focus is on outward appearances in preparation of new direction the Company wants to take.

Thank you for your review. We are proud of our great employees, and hear time and time again that they – along with our competitive total rewards offering – are one of the best aspects of working at Economical. I’m sorry to hear you felt work demands were too high. We recognize work life balance is extremely important to our employees, and offer a number of programs to support it, including: three weeks of vacation to start, three personal needs days per year, paid volunteer days, wellness campaigns twice a year, and a personal spending account to support employees’ investments in their wellness. We also offer flexible work options that vary depending on one’s role. We value your feedback and will use it as we continuously re-evaluate the employment experience at Economical.

Thanks for your review. We agree that we have great people working here. And we believe it’s very important to provide our employees with competitive rewards, including pension, benefits, and professional development opportunities. It’s true that Economical is going through big changes as we reach for ambitious goals for the future. As we implement new technology and continue on our journey of becoming a public company, we’ll work hard to keep the lines of communications open with our employees, who are so critical to our success. And, as much as possible, we’ll involve employees in decisions that affect their work. Hopefully this will help with the feeling of uncertainty.
