The company has undergone a massive change over the last few years and is experiencing some growing pains.

We appreciate you sharing your insights gained over ten years with Economical. We’re glad you found this to be a fantastic place that invests in employee education and development. We are, indeed, a dynamic company going through significant change as we strive to achieve big goals. We care deeply about the experience of our customers, brokers, and employees as we work to become Canada’s first mutual P&C insurance company to pursue public-company status. We acknowledge that growing pains can be an inevitable side effect of strategic growth, and we continue to look for ways to help our valued employees navigate through these changes.

Pros

Great people trying to do great work.

Cons

Company has invested a lot of money to introduce new Technology systems but are unable / unwilling to bring in the right people to maintain and move that solution forward. This has led to a over reliance on external Consulting services that you wonder who is actually the client. The actual employees are constantly being asked to maintain and do more with less. Less time, less resources, etc and are barely paid acceptable market salary for their job function. Useless executive leadership (that was almost entirely turned over within 1 year due to complete ineffectiveness) that has led to ineffective Director Level leadership. The few good ones quickly learn that this company is going nowhere and have departed.

Thanks for sharing your views. We’re proud of our employees and the work they’re doing, and how they’re supporting our evolving business. With transformation comes change, and it can easily feel overwhelming and the bigger picture can become obscured. This is why it’s so important to maintain open dialogue, and for our company to continue investing in great people and in industry-leading systems. Maintaining and advancing our skilled and creative workforce and the technology that supports it is an integral part of our business strategy. We’re excited to be on the path to becoming the first Canadian mutual property and casualty insurance company to go public. Economical has purposefully cultivated a highly skilled and engaged executive team over several years to lead this historic transformation. In terms of “market salary,” our HR teams regularly review and adjust our compensation and benefits to be competitive for the industry and the area. We also offer a number of additional perks like paid volunteer and personal-needs days, among many other wellness-focused initiatives. Thoughtful engagement with consultants lets us obtain expertise for short-term initiatives while allowing our employees to stay focused on delivering top-notch products and services to our brokers and customers without having to resize our workforce. We’re sorry to hear you were unhappy with your experience with our company. Feedback helps us to make continued improvements and we appreciate that you took the time to provide it.

Thank you for sharing your opinion about working at Economical. We're so glad you found our people to be our strength, and we couldn't agree more! Economical is on an exciting path to be the first national mutual Canadian P&C insurer to become a public company — a complex process that requires significant transformation work from within the company. To achieve this, we’re working with consultants who are experts in this work, which allows more of our employees to focus their expertise on the insurance business. We need to be there for our customers when they need us most. With this approach, we avoid hiring people for short-term work that will end when Economical goes public in the near future. We care deeply for our employees’ job security and respect them as insurance business experts. Consultants support our employees with business transformation work. Thanks for your input, and best of luck on your career journey.
