Pros

- Economical invests in their employees through CIP's, in house training and seminars. - I have had the opportunity to be part of multiple HR lead initiatives to improve the culture at Economical, such as the Diversity and Inclusion think tank. They understand that diversity leads to success. - In the last two years they have made so many strides to improve employee engagement and communication through all levels of the company and have done a great job. - We have social committees and HR supported events that make work fun. There are recognition systems in place to recognize those who bring their best. - I LOVE working at Economical.

Cons

- Although I think flex work is in the works, it is not supported by every department.

Great feedback. I’m glad you’ve benefitted from fun and rewarding programs at Economical, and thanks for your contributions to our Think Tank. Employees tell us they value our diverse and inclusive work environment, and we know that’s what helps us achieve our business goals. We make it a priority to recognize and reward great work. Our Aspire Higher program lets everyone throughout the company send their appreciation with eCards, and our Wall of Fame is a place for us to share stories of individuals or teams that go above and beyond — and those recipients can select a gift from an online catalogue. We celebrate career milestones with a digital yearbook, including personalized messages and photos from leaders and peers — and again, recipients can choose a gift from our catalogue. We also celebrate Economical Appreciation Week annually. From team get togethers, to reflecting on the things we appreciate about one another, it’s a special time for leaders and employees to celebrate great work together. We have different business needs across departments, so our flex work options can and do vary. But by creating an environment that promotes a healthy work/life balance and investing in technologies like Skype and video conferencing, we’ve been able to make it easier for teams to have the flexibility they need to get their work done at different hours and from different locations. Ask your leader about flex work hours, compressed work week options, personal needs days, wellness programs, vacation days, and paid volunteer days. Thanks again for your review.

Pros

Benifits are good pension is good.

Cons

No work life balance. You are expected to work an extra 1/2 hour a day for a day off. Then you are expected to use that day off for all of your appointments. Seniority means nothing. Oppertunities to take courses are based on a lottery system, however you are required to take courses for your performance appraisal. Too many underwriting changes almost daily, left to interpret wordings no clarification given. Very little training, don't invest in their resources.

Pros

Great company culture Open and non-restrictive dress code Work/life balance options Rewarding team events Ergonomic office Opportunities for career advancement Positive environment with great company values 3 week vacation & full benefits first day of job

Cons

Offices - TORONTO & MONTREAL only Not very many opportunities for career advancement (limited positions), although CIP training & career related education is paid for. Growing company - lots of process changes, trial and error. Job duties can change with changing processes from time to time. Shift work (productivity, attendance and work results affect shift bid). You may get stuck with a shift you don't want.

It’s true that growing pains are part of the process when companies like ours expand and change to meet the demands of today’s customers. We’ve had many process changes in an effort to continually improve. And to that end, we greatly value employees being open-minded to finding the best solutions.

Pros

Happy to have read other employees poor reviews because now I understand it's a company wide management problem.

Cons

Promotes people and then realizes that they didn't have appropriate HR approval so demotes them back to old position. No learning and development. No culture. Concerns are solicited and then no action is taken to resolve issues. Management is insanely secretive and basic information isn't shared. Executives and management blame employees for poor performance stemming from natural disasters and poor regulatory environment. No salary increases. Management has no leadership training.

Thanks for taking the time to submit a review. It’s great to hear that you got off to a good start with training, and that you’ve had a positive team experience. Our employees really set us apart, and help us foster a healthy culture at Economical. I’m sorry to hear that you’re finding the position stressful, particularly as it relates to achieving results. As a company, it’s essential that we’re focused on results since this is how we continue to improve how we do business, and respond to our brokers, customers, and employees. However, I agree with you — there’s a process involved in getting to the end goal.. Be sure to talk to your leader about your goals, progress, and concerns. Your leader is there to support you.

Thank you for your review. We are proud of our great employees, and hear time and time again that they – along with our competitive total rewards offering – are one of the best aspects of working at Economical. I’m sorry to hear you felt work demands were too high. We recognize work life balance is extremely important to our employees, and offer a number of programs to support it, including: three weeks of vacation to start, three personal needs days per year, paid volunteer days, wellness campaigns twice a year, and a personal spending account to support employees’ investments in their wellness. We also offer flexible work options that vary depending on one’s role. We value your feedback and will use it as we continuously re-evaluate the employment experience at Economical.

Pros

My coworkers are the best reason to work here but that won't last long if Economical continues to run the way it's running. Most of the people I know are looking elsewhere where they will actually be valued and treated well as employees - monetarily and emotionally.

Cons

The executives don't actually care about what's going on in the offices. They show up for annual meetings and that's it. No rewards for good workers, and they ignore poor performance by other workers just so they can keep numbers steady. Head office and executives continue to enjoy and celebrate holidays while their front line people (claims staff) are treated like assembly line workers with no rewards. -The only rewards the top performers get is more work that they cant trust the poor performers to do. But the poor performers continue to be paid the same. -Team leaders are not on the same page as each other or the same page as upper management. Things are not communicated down to staff. -Team leaders are not equipped with mental health training when their staff is clearly struggling. As long as we are producing numbers, they are happy, regardless of if we are struggling mentally. -No flexibility in hours or options to work from home. -No room to move up unless you have family working in head office or elsewhere in the company.

Thank you for taking time to share your thoughts. At Economical, we care deeply about maintaining a culture that’s balanced and rewarding for all employees, so it’s concerning to us to hear your perspective. Any of our team members who are struggling with their mental health are encouraged to take advantage of the complimentary counseling support and total health solutions offered through our employee assistance program, in addition to talking to their doctor/health care provider. Wellness is highly valued here, which is why we partner with this service, in addition to offering personal needs days and wellness initiatives throughout the year. The work you do in claims is making a difference and it’s the reason we have achieved our long-standing 91% claims satisfaction rating. Our management teams are encouraged to applaud and reward employees through our recognition program, Aspire Higher. Economical offers a competitive salary, pension and saving programs, and flexible benefits to further reward and support our staff. Our front-line claims teams have set hours and location requirements to support our corporate value of customer focus. We need to be there for our policyholders when they need us most, so the crucial roles you and your colleagues play here cannot be underestimated. We’re sorry you felt lack of support in career development. We support our employees talent and ambitions through programs such as paid professional educational support and paid days off for exam study. We have regular engagement surveys — including one this month — to gather honest, anonymous feedback and use it to affect change wherever it is necessary. Please use that opportunity to pass on your feedback and/or contact HR Shared Services to discuss concerns in person.
